Bless you about the animals. I'll tell you what, the only bit of Atonement that really upset me was the horses on the beach. Horses being hurt in films makes me die inside. As far as books go The Bell Jar is a pretty good choice but I think you'll enjoy Catcher in the Rye more; both have a distinct and compelling narration style but I think you'll personally find J.D.
